Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has urged the Ibrox club to make a move for Southampton midfielder Steven Davis in the upcoming January transfer window.

Next month is an important one for Steven Gerrard and his recruitment team, with quality required in a number of positions if the club are to mount a sustained Scottish Premiership title bid.

One area that could do with fresh ideas is central midfield, with Lassana Coulibaly losing form and Ovie Ejaria returning to Liverpool after his season-long loan deal was ripped up.

Ferguson agrees and he has one man in mind to turn around the Gers’ form – former teammate Davis.

Writing in his Daily Record column, the Rangers legend explains:

We are talking about an individual of the highest quality. He is great on the ball, he can score goals as well as being versatile. He can sit in midfield or play that bit further forward. I’d go as far as to say that Davis is the complete midfielder, that’s how highly I rated him.

Davis is someone who would certainly raise the bar at the club and he’s exactly who Steven Gerrard should be targeting. They lack a presence in central midfield, Davis would solve that problem as he would dictate the game for him.

There’s a lack of someone with the ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck and the name I keep coming back to is Steven Davis.

The Southampton man is currently rated as worth £3.6m by Transfermarkt, although his current deal at the English Premier League club expires at the end of the season, opening the possibility of a budget January signing for Rangers.

Winning eight trophies at Ibrox in his first stint at the club, including three consecutive SPL wins, is there a better player on the market right now that can help Steven Gerrard’s side head towards a league title?
