Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has called into question the amount of loan players the club are signing for the first-team, telling PLZ Soccer that manager Steven Gerrard would prefer to add quality to his squad on a long-term basis.

Rangers have signed seven players on loan over the last two transfer windows, although only five currently remain at the club.

Signing players on a temporary basis is clearly a major part of the club’s strategy, but the Gers legend feels it’s not the right way to go.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, the 41-year-old said:

I’m not a fan of bringing in the loan players. I think these loan players will go back. Jermain Defoe won’t, he’s got an 18-month loan and I don’t think they’ll cancel that.

I think in an ideal world, Steven Gerrard would like to bring in players on two and three year contracts and that’s going to cost money. That’s when you’ve got to go out and pay transfer fees and whatever.

I don’t know if Rangers have got that to go and do that. But in an ideal world, I think they need to go and get three or four players who are going to kickstart that team again.

Most fans would probably agree with the sentiment of Ferguson’s comments, although loans do allow us to attract a higher quality of player than we would ordinarily, Jermain Defoe and Ryan Kent included.

Ultimately building something long-term is what we need to do, but when Gerrard came into the club the squad was in serious disrepair and the fact is that loans have helped us bridge a quality gap.

Heading into the summer hopefully we can turn a few more temporary signings into permanent ones and really give fans a bit of hope about the next few years.
