It looks likes Rangers are continuing to assess possible replacements for Jermain Defoe with speculation linking the Light Blues to two strikers plying their trade in the English lower leagues.

Wigan Athletic’s Kyle Joseph was said to be a potential pre-contract target but Football Insider claims that we are, potentially, no longer interested:

“Rangers may pull the plug on their pursuit of Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph as Celtic rival Newcastle United for a deal.

“Joseph, 19, has attracted strong interest from the Glasgow giants and Premier League elite after snubbing the League One club’s offer of a new deal.

“This comes after Newcastle were reported to be the new favourites for Joseph, 19, following talks with his representatives.

“Rangers have sounded out the teenage star as they assessed a potential pre-contract deal.

“But they may now pull out of the race to leave the coast clear for Celtic and Newcastle.”

The latest name rumoured to be on Rangers radar is Blackpool’s Jerry Yates who, according to The ’72, has joined Fashion Sakala, Jonson Clarke-Harris and Britt Assombalonga in being lined up for a move to Glasgow.

The 24-year old has been in decent form this season, scoring 20 goals for the Tangerines, and much will depend on whether or not he can fire his side to promotion, similar to Clarke-Harris, clubs that don’t make it to the Championship may need to cash in on valuable assets given the absence of fans this season.

If Defoe does leave, Rangers will need to replace him in the squad, it has been one of the key factors to our success this season that when Kemar Roofe or Alfredo Morelos were unavailable, we still had quality back-up on the bench or available to start and give them a rest – with the summer window not yet open, don’t be surprised if the list of names expands beyond the current five being banded about.
