Rangers return to league action on Saturday with Kilmarnock the visiting team to Ibrox as Michael Beale looks to close the gap on Celtic at the top of the table, even if it is just for 24 hours and however futile our pursuit might seem.

With the chance of winning the league cup blown by several poor managerial decisions, Beale has a real decision to make in the coming weeks – does he start planning for next season already or does he stick with what he already knows?

Well, if he doesn’t change anything he can’t expect to see an improvement in performance. We know what players like John Lundstram and Glen Kamara are capable of, however, this season we just haven’t it at all. The injuries that the pair are carrying are clearly having a bigger impact than anyone is letting on given how sharp the decline has been.

In Nico Raskin and Todd Cantwell we have two young players who are dying to make an impact and hopefully, over the coming weeks we will also see Ridvan Yilmaz, Tom Lawrence and John Souttar back on the training pitch with their teammates, Ianis Hagi should also start to get more minutes to get him up to speed.

He’s talked about it – but then he’s talked about a lot of things – but partnering Alfredo Morelos and Antonio Colak hasn’t been seen for any great length of time, put them together, could it really be any worse than what we have seen so far?

What the manager has to do though is find a system and approach that his players are comfortable with because whatever it was he was wanting them to do last week just wasn’t good enough given the squad that was available to him on the day – if Giovanni van Bronckhorst could point to the players that were injured as a limitation to his chances of success, Michael Beale has more than enough quality at his disposal, even if we do have a lengthy list of those on the treatment table.

He has been in charge long enough and talked up his familiarity with the players as being an advantage so, it’s fair to start demanding more from the first whistle and more in terms of a cohesive game plan that makes sense and gets the best out of our squad starting with Killie and a comfortable three points.
