Rangers fans will now, probably, have to wait until the end of the season before finding out if Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are going to extend their contracts. Unfortunately, this is modern football and we have to get used to it.

Connor Goldson waited until the end of his contract before putting pen to paper on a new one and I’d expect something similar with Kent and Morelos, there seems to be more smoke around the Colombian leaving although that has always been there.

Speaking to Football Insider, RTV pundit Alan Hutton was asked about the influence of team-mates when it came to contract negotiations, which is relevant after Goldson admitted there isn’t much he could do in this situation or that anyone could have said to him last year:

“It can be a difficult one.

“When you look at Connor Goldson signing his contract that was good for himself and the club but it is normally just down to your personal preference.

“They will listen to others and you want them to do well and sign new deals. But if they see their future away from the club then it might not affect their decision.

“When you look at Alfredo and Ryan Kent, they have really hit form. They seem to really flourish under Beale and he will want them to stay there is no doubt about that.

“They won’t want to lose them now that is for sure. So if they can tie them down those two players definitely make the team stronger.“

Hutton is right. Football is a very transient industry in which only those at the top of the game get to choose where they work, however, this doesn’t mean that players don’t want to better themselves – especially in terms of finance.

People forget that footballers are only human because, let’s face it, if you or I were offered double our wage – Joe Aribo got a pay rise of more than three times what he was on at Rangers – we would all take it.
