Kemar Roofe looked back to his sharpest against Cove Rangers last weekend, yes, the standard of opposition has to be taken into consideration but it was good to see him scoring goals again.

The summer arrival has 14 goals and two assists in a little over 18 full games this season and will have been frustrated at injuries holding him back from displaying his full capabilities. Speaking to Football Insider, fellow Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes that the best is yet to come from Roofe after a promising start to his Rangers career:

“When you’ve got a goalscorer banging them in, it gives the rest of the team faith. That’s massive for the dressing room.

“I think we’ll see the best of him next season. Sometimes it takes a year to bed in but he’s still scored goals. That what he does.

“He doesn’t need many opportunities and at that level you would expect him to be scoring goals week in, week out.

“It was a cup match on Sunday but you’ve still got to do your job. Every striker just wants to score, no matter what game it is or what competition it is because it sets you up for the next game.

“He just needs to find some consistency. I’m sure next season he’ll be a lot better. Sometimes you learn a lot about yourself in a new league. But let’s be honest, he’s not had a bad season.”

Roofe arrived at Rangers less than fully fit, he hadn’t started a competitive fixture since the previous December and was unable to complete a proper pre-season. This year should be different.

Rather than going into the season playing catch up he should be able to have some quality time off before returning to prepare properly for the defence of the title and a shot at the Champions League – having a fully fit Kemar Roofe will make a huge difference to our forward line, we’ve seen glimpses of what he is capable of and the prospect of him being even better is a truly mouth watering one.
