Rangers tend to do their business early in the transfer window, European qualifiers dictating that Steven Gerrard needs to have as good a squad available as possible to advance to the group stages each season.

This summer was, of course, unprecedented, given the restrictions that Covid-19 placed on the club’s finances with only Juninho Bacuna arriving late in the window once we knew what competition we were going to be playing in.

The 24-year old had just a year left on his deal at Huddersfield which meant a big fee was never going to change hands, however, their chairman, Phil Hodgkinson, claims that his club could eventually make back the £2million they paid to Groningen for the midfielder, as told to Yorkshire Live:

“With Juninho, we had interest from two or three clubs in the [January] window.

“Rangers were interested in him back in January, they came back in and we ultimately did a deal where we didn’t get a transfer fee up front but we’ve actually done a really good deal.

“It’s appearance-based, European-based, with a big sell-on, we’ve got a significant sell-on, where we will ultimately at least get our money back.”

It’s another sign of Ross Wilson’s inventiveness as sporting director, making sure that every deal is one that is right for Rangers. Under these sort of terms, if Bacuna is a success, we will still pay less than the going rate for a player with his ability and experience but if he isn’t, we will still make at least our money back or even a profit if we sell him further down the line.

Who scored the winner in Sunday's first Old Firm of 2021/22?

We’ve seen recently with the departures of Cedric Itten and Niko Katic – two players who are fourth choice at best for their respective positions – that Wilson is still able to get strong transfer fees written into loan contracts should they do well, a reported £3m for each player isn’t bad given their status at the club.

Having someone of Wilson’s ability is just as important, if not more important, than any player that we have on the books – he could be the difference between success and failure both on and off the park.
