Kris Boyd wasn’t known for his mobility, work rate or ability to single handedly cause a defence problems in the way that Alfredo Morelos does but he did alright for us didn’t he?

Rangers have been linked with a few different forward options since the league title was won some eight weeks ago all with varying skill sets and qualities, for Jonson Clarke-Harris, he shares his biggest asset with the now Sky Sports pundit and former Gers number nine – scoring goals.

Netting his 32nd of the season in a promotion clinching draw with Lincoln City having come from 3-0 down, the Islington Gazette’s Josh Bunting, who has seen Clarke-Harris at close quarters this season, gave me an insight into what the 26-year old would bring to Ibrox, if the speculation is to be believed and that Rangers are preparing a bid:

“He’s a finisher and needs service, he’s powerful and is quick. Can be a bit lazy but put the ball into him in the six yard box he’s going to score.”

You can coach a player to work harder but it’s not so easy to find a natural at doing the hardest thing in the game – putting the ball in the back of the net.

It may be that in Clarke-Harris we are looking for a player more suited to domestic football where we dominate possession and chances and our central striker isn’t isolated or expected to do as much running, after all, Boyd would frequently score foals at the weekend only to find himself warming the bench when the European games came around in mid-week.

With Fashion Sakala already signed up, another central striker would surely see the end of Jermain Defoe’s Rangers career, if it is to be the end, it wasn’t a bad way to finish by scoring his first Old Firm goal and leaving with a strike rate of nearly one every two games, not much for Clarke-Harris to live up to then.
