For all that Allan McGregor had an incredible season, it shouldn’t be forgotten just how important Jon McLaughlin was at times throughout the season.

With 12 clean sheets in 14 games, he was near faultless whenever he was called upon, offering a calming presence behind the Gers defence.

Speaking to Rangers TV, the 33-year old Scotland international has backed last season’s title triumph to provide the platform for greater success this term:

“That has got to be the aim.

“As I said, with Champions League football a real possibility now, it is a massive carrot for the whole squad to be concentrating on at the moment leading into the end of pre-season.

“Long term, this squad are hungry now for more titles and for cup success as well. That was one of the disappointments of last season, feeling that there was more that we could have done and there were other trophies that were within our grasp.

“We know it is going to be a much more difficult season, a much more competitive season this year and we have to be fully ready for that and that fight for the entire year.”

Talk is cheap but the squad and management team are saying all the right things, it’s encouraging that there seems to be a real sore point around the lack of domestic cup victories and an urge to refocus and go again in the league – it will be a different challenge, and more than likely, a more stern one, but one that we should have every confidence in Steven Gerrard’s squad embracing.
