Rangers pursuit of Joey Veerman has perhaps been a bit more public than our normal transfer acquisitions but given the profile of the player and that he could be the final piece of the jigsaw, the stakes are higher than they have ever been.

Rumours of various bids and proposals surfaced over the weekend, however, a journalist close to Heerenveen claims that, as yet, despite our interest, there has only been one offer for the talented midfielder.

Sander de Vreis reported the latest news on the Dutch Under-21 star, giving the details of who has bid and where the current bidding is at:

“Joey Veerman says the same as Ferry de Haan here along the line: no developments regarding a transfer. The story is known: Hellas Verona has made an offer of 5 million euros, Rangers FC has not, but is very interested in the midfielder.”

The player himself has been coy about being linked with a move to Ibrox, however, when the Verona offer was first reported, he didn’t rule out moving elsewhere with several interesting options on the table.

Given the importance of qualifying for the Champions League I’d hope that, if we do want Veerman, that we move sooner rather than later, especially when you consider that we will already be without three midfielders for most of the qualifiers.

Adding “quality not quantity” is this summer’s mantra, and Veerman certainly ticks this box, it wouldn’t be the first time since Ross Wilson arrived though that a player is announced when the deal looks dead or everything has gone quiet, fingers crossed and all that.
