Gerrard tipped to offer “pal” Rangers deal

|
Jermain Defoe refuses to show any signs of ageing and after roasting a player almost half his age against Celtic in scoring Rangers fourth goal of the afternoon, few could blame Steven Gerrard for wanting to keep the veteran striker around.
Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday played with Defoe for 18-months before leaving for Hearts in the summer and believes that he will still be here next season, as told on the Open Goal podcast:
“I do think Rangers will keep him for another year.
“I’ve said that for a while he will give him another year. He’s pals with Gerrard. The amount of experience to the rest of the squad, you can’t underestimate what he brings to young players.

“So many situations when Rangers need a goal, they bring on Itten, any time Defoe plays he scores a goal. Comes on for five mins yesterday and he scores. He still brings a lot to the team, I’d love to know his goals-to-minute ratio. He loves being there.”

Being friends with Gerrard got Defoe the move to Ibrox in the first place, scoring 31 goals and having 10 assists in 70 games has kept him here, it’s a remarkable return for any striker who rarely starts, let alone one approaching his 39th birthday in a few weeks.

Having players like Defoe and Steven Davis around has been key to us winning the league, they are the perfect professionals and set the standard both on and off the pitch for others to follow.

Gerrard revealed that Rangers have begun talks with the former England international but gave little else away – let’s hope he sticks around though because for players like Charlie Lindsay and Tony Weston in the academy, the opportunity to learn from and watch at close hand one of the best in the business will only stand them, and Rangers, in good stead for the future.
