Rangers preparations for next season are well underway with new signings on board and several of Steven Gerrard’s key players singing contract extensions.

One man who’s future is, as yet, undecided is Jermain Defoe with the former England international reportedly in talks with the club, however, as the gaffer revealed to Sky Sports, these are still at an early stage and very much down to what the player himself is hoping for as he approaches the end of his playing days.

Former England team-mate, Kevin Phillips, believes that a player/coach role could be the way forwards for Defoe, especially with the arrival of Fashion Sakala on the horizon, as told to Football Insider:

“It sounds like they’re talking about an extension.

“Maybe they want to keep Jermain around the club to help with this young player (in reference to Sakala).

“To help him settle in and show him the ropes. There might be a striker coaching role for Jermain there.

“It makes sense for him. Why would you not? He’s one of the best Premier League strikers of all time.

“If you have him there, use him. He’s done very well up there and if he wants to move on you shake his hand, say well done and part ways.”

It’s clear that Defoe is a positive influence around the training ground as well as chipping in with 31 goals and 10 assists during his time at Ibrox, Gerrard will want him to stay in some form but a lot of it will come down to finances and what he is willing to accept.

The choice will be stepping down a few levels to get more minutes on the field, or stay at Rangers where he will get the perfect opportunity to start the next phase of his career, as the manager said, it’s very much down to what Defoe wants to do, Phillips is right, if he does want to move, we’ll thank him for his efforts and be glad we got to see one of the finest finishers of the last 20 years in the famous Light Blue shirt.
