The news that James Tavernier is to spend at least the next few seasons at Rangers is music to the ears of those of a Light Blue persuasion, a far cry from when he was a target of the boo boys.

Former Gers right-back, Alan Hutton, is a huge fan of the skipper and, speaking to Football Insider, understands why he doesn’t want to go anywhere.

“He’s so important to what Rangers do in every sense.

“Especially going forward, I mean his stats are incredible, absolutely incredible, something I’ve never seen from a full-back really in all my years.

“He’s been outstanding, it’s probably been his best season so far in a Rangers shirt so he definitely deserves it.

“Rangers are building something for the future at the moment. Why would you not want to be part of that?

“They’re just at the start and they’re going for another trophy in the Scottish Cup. They’ll want to build on these victories.

“You see how much it means to them winning the league. If I was him, I’d want to be part of that for the next three, four seasons anyway.”

Tavernier has been incredible this season and would have been a shoe-in for player of the season but for the knee injury that has seen him sidelined in recent weeks, his importance to Rangers is far more than goals and assists, the way he drives the team on from his right-back berth is equally as important.

Nathan Patterson will have to be patient to make the position his own but in the skipper, he has the perfect role model to learn from and hopefully someone who will soon lift the first of many trophies in the years to come.
