Ally McCoist has thrown his weight behind a potential move by Rangers for Jack Wilshere with the free agent yet to decide his next club after his release by West Ham United at the beginning of October, in an interview with The Scottish Sun.

The former Gers gaffer feels that his old club would be a great fit and highlights the management of Jermain Defoe as the perfect example of how he could be utilised.

When asked if Ibrox and a move to Scotland would suit the 34-cap England international, he said:

“If he comes to Rangers then great because he is a fantastic player.

“To be honest, I just want to see Jack Wilshere playing anywhere regularly to get a smile back on that lad’s face again because he has suffered terribly from injuries.”

“I hate to say this but, at 28, it looks as if his career could pass him by and Jack will be remembered as one of those guys with amazing talent who couldn’t fulfil his potential in terms of the number of games he played.

“I’d hate to see that happen to someone with Jack Wilshere’s exceptional talent. Clearly Jack has suffered from injuries. Well, few people in the game know more about the demands of being a top midfielder than Steven Gerrard and his No.2 Gary McAllister.

“I’m sure Jack would benefit, as Jermain Defoe has done, from having his games handpicked without the pressure of having to play three games a week.”

The longer Wilshere waits before deciding his next move, the less chance there is of a deal being done to bring him up to Rangers, Ross Wilson has shown that he can be patient when looking to get the best deal for his club, as shown in the case of Bongani Zungu, but neither is he the sort of operator who will panic buy.

Which Rangers player has the most international caps?

Gerrard is well catered for in midfield and when the window first shut, injuries to Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo gave a false impression that we needed reinforcements, however, with the arrival of Zungu we now have six internationals that are being rotated in the engine room – all of which are on form – negating the need for a player that can’t be relied up to play week-in-week-out if required, giving the gaffer a sore head in the progress.
