Rangers are showing interest in Rennes defender Mexer ahead of the summer transfer window, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
The Gers need defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season with Joe Worrall heading back to parent club Nottingham Forest and Gareth McAuley’s contract expiring.
Gerrard is clearly making it one of his priorities too, personally making a scouting trip to France during the week to check out Mexer in action first hand, say the paper.
With a current market value of £3.6m according to Transfermarkt, Rangers could in fact pick him up on a free transfer during to his current deal at the Ligue 1 side coming to an end.
The 30-year-old has extensive experience in the French and Portuguese top-flights, giving him the kind of profile that ticks all the right boxes when looking at defenders this summer.
He has European credentials too, making seven appearances in this season’s UEFA Europa League.
His talents were on full display last week when he helped Rennes beat Paris Saint-Germain in the French Cup Final, scoring in the 2-2 draw that was eventually decided on penalties.
All signs point to this transfer being a belter, so hopefully the club can convince him his future lies in Glasgow.
