Rangers are set to do battle with Stoke City for the signature of Dundee United winger Louis Appere, according to a report in Football Insider.

Appere has recently been capped at international level by Scotland Under-21s after an impressive debut season at senior level.

Terrors Manager, Robbie Neilson, expressed his delight at the youngster’s form after initially planning to gradually integrate the forward into his first XI:

“Louis has been brilliant. He really has been excellent for us this season.

“We sort of allotted for 10-12 games for him this season when he came back from his loan in the juniors, where he did well.

“But he’s surpassed all our expectations to make over 30 appearances, scoring and creating goals.”

The Perth-born player has five goals and six assists to his name and has reaped the benefits of having fellow Rangers target, Lawrence Shankland, on the end of much of his creative play.

Shankland, a lifelong Gers fan, has been linked with a move to Ibrox over the last couple of seasons and his name surfaced again recently in a list of potential replacements for Alfredo Morelos.

United would want to keep their best players if they finally regain their place in the Premiership and Rangers would look to get value for money with any potential signing targets as they look to reclaim their crown as Scottish football’s top dogs, they would also be reluctant to overpay for players that are unproven in the top flight.

Who was the first signing of Rangers 9-in-a-row success in 1988/89?

Having lost out in their pursuit of Tyrese Campbell to the Potters, Ross Wilson will be keen to identify potential targets as soon as possible with FIFA revealing that the transfer window will open as soon as the 2019/20 season finishes which could lead to a scramble across the continent.

With Jake Hastie and Glenn Middleton already at the club, another promising youngster is not what Rangers need to challenge Celtic at the top and as such the rumour linking Appere is unlikely to excite many amongst the Light Blues faithful support.
