Rangers are looking to sign Kilmarnock youngster Liam Smith, according to The Scottish Sun.

The paper say he is highly rated at Rugby Park but that the Ayrshire side now have a serious battle to retain him, with Manchester City also keen on adding him to their youth set-up.

The report reckons he has already visited the City training ground, potentially putting Rangers at a disadvantage.

Capped for the Scotland U16s side, Smith is a left-sided attacker and would join a talented bunch of well-coached youngsters if he does move to Rangers.

The path to the first-team at Ibrox is also much clearer compared to the English Premier League side, with Steven Gerrard showing he is not afraid to play young talent if they show enough progress.

The upcoming transfer window won’t only be about signing first-team ready talent, but also young players for the future, with a focus needing to be put on our academy sides if we’re ever going to build a consistently successful team.
