Ianis Hagi was the latest Rangers player to be linked with a move to Aston Villa and, with a reported £18million price tag, it’s easy to see why an offer would be accepted if it came along.

He is an important member of Giovanni van Bronkhorst’s squad, however, as covered already by Vital Rangers, he is far from irreplaceable.

Even before we signed him on a permanent deal Hagi was attracting interest, his potential and reputation will always mean that he is coveted by other clubs, the link to Villa an obvious one given the connection to Steven Gerrard, however, Romanian football legend, Adrian Mutu, believes that he shouldn’t be in a rush to leave Rangers, as told to ProSport:

“I do not understand why Ianis has to leave.

“Rangers is a great team and I think Ianis needs to strengthen its position and become a scorer.

“He needs a goal, he also needs a goal for the national team. People are waiting for the goal.

“The moment the goal comes, then you will leave with a different status. You go differently as number one to Rangers.

“I think he has very good performances at Rangers and it’s not an easy championship.”

The thing is, Hagi might not have much of a choice. If a bid of £18m came in for him it would be accepted pretty quickly given that we only paid £3m for him less than two years ago and that we have a few players that could play on the right-hand side of the attack.

It would also allow us to reinvest in the team whilst pocketing a healthy profit, we only need to look at the likes of Siriki Dembele who is out of contract in the summer and immediately available for £4m to see how a deal to sell Hagi makes a lot of sense.

Mutu is right, most clubs will be a step down from Rangers but, in the real world, we simply can’t compete with the finances on offer in England and in some of Europe’s top leagues, it is also the way in which we have to operate to become self sufficient, don’t get too attached to our best players anymore, it’ll only cause heart ache when the leave.
