After fearing the worst initially, it looks as though Ianis Hagi could be missing for just one fixture, providing he has fully recovered from Covid-19.

The Romanian internatioal had faced the prospect of missing 20 days because he was symptomatic and was in North Macedonia when he registered the positive result, however, his country’s governing body have done us a favour by negotiating Hagi’s early release, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

A spokesman for Romania said:

“Ianis Hagi complained of slight headaches in the national team’s camp in Skopje.

“He performed a quick test under the coordination of the medical staff of the national team and the result is positive.

“The player immediately went into isolation.

“To date, on the occasion of this action of the national team, Ianis had performed five Covid tests, all with a negative result.”

Hopefully Hagi makes a speedy recovery and suffers no long-term effects and that he can return to training as soon as he returns to Scotland, the 10 day, shortened isolation period, takes him right up to when we are due to face Lyon in the Europa League – at his creative best, it is a game Steven Gerrard would love to have him available for.

Who scored the winner in Sunday's first Old Firm of 2021/22?

The Gers gaffer has rarely been able to call upon a full squad this season and for all that he would still have a decent array of options, the last thing he would want is to lose a player that he regularly selects on the right-hand side of attack against quality opposition – the 22-year old playmaker has also made a decent start to the season for both club and country.

It’s now a case of waiting to see if, first of all, the player recovers, but secondly, whether or not he is named in Gerrard’s squad for what is the most eagerly anticipated game of the group stages.
