Rangers recruitment so far in January has been focussed on the midfield and forward line, however, there will be one eye being kept on the centre of defence for the future.

Ben Davies and Connor Goldson could form a partnership at the heart of the Rangers rearguard for several years but, as we saw earlier this season, we need to have reliable backups.

John Souttar is, hopefully, over his injury problems and can be relied upon with Leon King also proving that he has the potential to, one day, step up permanently, rarely has a teenager with such little experience been thrown in to such deep water as the, now, 19-year old.

One man who has almost been forgotten by Rangers fans is Filip Helander, the big Swede barely having made it into double figures over the last couple of seasons, journalist Dean Jones telling GiveMeSport that it would take a miraculous recovery to see his stay at Ibrox extended now:

“I think we have to see when and how he comes back into the setup after injury. It’s tough to hand him a new contract at the moment.

“And given the circumstances for the club, from their point of view, you’ve got to make a clear decision on whether he is going to be right for them going forward or whether the money that’s allocated to him could be better used elsewhere.

“But ultimately, they’ll hope he proves them wrong. I think that there is hope he can try in the last few months of the season to make that a very easy decision for them.”

There have been rumours of a departure to Malmo for Helander but I just can’t see why another club would take that risk, after all, he has played just 60 games in nearly four seasons – for the best part of £15,000 a week, we just haven’t got our money’s worth and that sort of money can be better spent, regardless of how good the big Swede is on his day.
