Last season much of the talk was about how Rangers would cope if we sold Alfredo Morelos, and then in the second half of the season we found out.

The added time that Steven Gerrard and his coaching staff have been able to spend on the training pitch with the players has been apparent this season with Morelos scoring in just one game – the 3-0 win over St Mirren at Ibrox – and yet his side has completely dominated every game to the extent that they have only conceded nine attempts on target – combined – in the first six league games.

Rangers also had over 20 attempts again and part of the reason for this has been the fluidity of Gerrard’s front four with players able to come into the starting XI and make a genuine impact, Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo, Jermain Defoe and Cedric Itten were all missing at the weekend and yet there was still enough creativity to open up Hamilton almost at will.

One player who looked rejuvenated was Ianis Hagi, the £4million signing from Genk was a constant threat to the Accies rearguard, Ryan Kent used his pace and dribbling power to cause mayhem whereas the Romanian international’s movement and passing got him through on goal on a couple of occasions only to be denied by smart goalkeeping or last ditch defending.

Rangers just didn’t have that depth last season and ultimately, it cost us the title when we ran out of steam after the winter break, the bench is now packed with international players that can make a difference when called upon in both defence and attack.

Do Rangers still need a goalscoring, box-to-box midfielder?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The Gers gaffer recently revealed that Hagi had been carrying a knock but is now fully fit, and it definitely showed against Brian Rice’s side, the whole summer we have been crying out for a goalscoring midfielder but with the change of system and Aribo, Kent and Hagi all showing that they can contribute to the goals for tally, maybe it isn’t as big a requirement as previously thought.
