Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie faces an intriguing few weeks in terms of his immediate future at the club.

With the Allan McGregor situation still to be concluded, it remains to be seen if McCrorie will be ‘promoted’ within the squad next season. If the veteran was to retire, it would mean the 24-year old would be able to provide direct competition presumably to Jon McLaughlin for the gloves.

If McGregor remains within the squad or if another goalkeeper arrives, it would leave the brother of former Rangers player Ross, with a considerable dilemma – that would come down to moving on for first team football or if a final loan would be sanctioned, depending on assurances given by the club on his future.

It is yet another sub-plot to a very busy pre-season that is set to unfold.

One-time Rangers ‘keeper Cammy Bell has assessed the situation with the following verdict:

“I’d always encourage him to stay with Rangers but I understand that he needs to be playing to progress again. Even if Allan stays or goes, then Robby has to go to the club and ask whether they still see him as a No 1 in the future.”

“If they do then that’s great but he still has to be playing. He’s much better than being the No 3 at a huge club.”

“It will be a tough conversation and a lot will depend on how Rangers see Robby’s future. They might decide he isn’t what they need but Robby wouldn’t be short of offers.”

McCrorie was thrust into the limelight early last season, when a Covid outbreak had a significant impact on the squad, as well as then-manager, Steven Gerrard.

For the Europa League Playoff against Alashkert and then the first Old Firm derby of the season, the ‘keeper answered the call as well as passing the test with flying colours and no goals conceded. Those games turned out to be McCrorie’s only appearances over the course of the whole of the 21/22 campaign.
