There will, at some point, be the introduction of VAR into Scottish football this season. How and to what extent we aren’t quite sure, a post-World Cup implementation has been brought forward but, as yet, nobody knows when, standard protocol for the SPFL and SFA.

There were rumours that it was being trialed during our game against Livingston on Saturday and, if it was, the officials would have had a field day with some of Don Robertson’s decisions.

The worst was clearly when Philip Cancar, already on a yellow card, escaped further punishment for a late and reckless challenge on Scott Wright with Giovanni van Bronckhorst clearly not happy when talking in the build up to the Champions League qualifier against Union St Gilloise:

“I thought it was a clear foul and second yellow card on Scott (Wright) on Saturday. It was smart coaching from Livingston to quickly make the sub after this.”

Of course it was a clear foul, it couldn’t have been an easier one to call and yet Robertson took the bizarre option of speaking to the Livingston captain and the player, Dave Martindale subsequently getting the nod from his skipper to take Cancar off, almost as if it was a pre-season friendly.

VAR will solve a lot of the problems in Scottish football – see Antonio Colak’s disallowed equaliser for one – however, what it won’t solve is the standard of officiating.

Buckle up, it’s going to be another one of those seasons.
