It’s no secret that we could well be losing one of our most influential players next season if Connor Goldson doesn’t extend his current Rangers contract, a player who is important in his own right but who, without his presence, there is an argument for both James Tavernier and Calvin Bassey not being the players they currently are.

Speaking ahead of the Scottish Cup final, Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed that a decision has not yet been made and that there is still a chance of Goldson being around next season, as reported by The Rangers Review.

“The chance that he will still be a Rangers player after tomorrow will be small. I’d love to have Connor in the team next year but as you see quite a lot when players get out of contract there is two possibilities.

“That is to keep playing for Rangers or to move on to another challenge but I still have in my mind he will still be part of Rangers next year. We’ll have to watch in the coming weeks.

“I think Connor has been amazing for this team. If it will be his last game tomorrow? I don’t know right now.”

Admittedly, it depends if you are a glass half full or half empty kind of person when interpreting Gio’s statement, if Goldson had made his mind up then surely the contract offer would have simply been rejected, however, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

It would certainly make summer recruitment a lot easier if he decided to stick around, the defence probably wouldn’t need any more attention unless there were players sold.

There are still fans in our support who don’t realise how good Goldson is and, much like Tavernier, we’ll only truly appreciate him once he’s gone, hopefully, that date won’t be any time soon
