It very much looks like Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the top – if not sole – target for the vacant manager’s position at Rangers, the former Feyenoord boss being the only candidate who has been spotted meeting for an interview with Ross Wilson and Stewart Robertson although Ronald Koeman has been heavily linked in the last 24 hours.

It was on Sky Sports that we saw Gio heading home with his representatives revealing that talks with Rangers had been “positive“, a suggestion that we could be close to seeing the next person charged with leading our illustrious club.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge hopes that Van Bronckhorst knows exactly what he is letting himself in for given what is at stake this season for Rangers:

“It is a very attractive job. If you win the league this season, you’re in the Champions League group stages automatically because of the coefficient in Scotland now.

“But, in Scotland, second is last, so whoever would take that job is under pressure straightaway. They’re thrown straight into the deep end.”

The rewards are massive, qualification for the Champions League will have a huge effect on transfer budget and will wipe out any losses from this season in one single stroke, failure to qualify and he will be up against it knowing that it will be Celtic and our only real title rivals that will be pocketing the £30-40million instead.

Bridge is right though in that whoever takes charge will be under pressure immediately if we don’t retain the Scottish Premiership title, we are in a good position despite not playing that well yet this season and an upturn in fortunes could put us in a good position for the winter break.

With a league cup semi-final and a do or die Europa League game the first two fixtures, the deep end couldn’t get much deeper.
