Rangers preparations for next season are well underway with Fashion Sakala being the latest to join a squad intent on retaining the Scottish Premiership title and making an impression in the Champions League.

Steven Gerrard is already well equipped in the forward department but, speaking to Football Insider, former Arsenal and Everton striker, Kevin Campbell, feels that it is a wise move:

“I’m sure they will be a few songs about him when the fans get back.

“When you have Champions League aspirations, to get through to the group stage. It stretches your squad. So you’re looking at signing players who can fill in, who can do a job here and there. Maybe Sakala is that type of player.

“You can never have enough firepower. If Rangers get a few injuries to key people, you’re struggling.

“He clearly knows where the goal is but he’s not prolific, he could be a good squad player.”

Sakala has a decent return for a player not known as an out and out striker, and we have seen this season that the approach taken by Gerrard to spread the load across the squad, in terms of goals and creativity, has been a successful one.

Previously we were too reliant on Alfredo Morelos but the fact that we are currently only behind Bayern Munich in Europe for goals scored – we have two games to go though – is a total vindication of the recruitment policy.

Sakala might not be the type of player who can get 20-30 goals a season but, if he can make a similar contribution to the one he has made at Oostende then he will provide more than adequate cover for the likes of Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos.

As Campbell rightly says, “you can never have enough firepower”.
