It was always going to happen.

Steven Gerrard is one of the favourites to be newly rich Loyalty Newcastle United’s next manager, even though Steve Bruce is still in a job – for now.

As long as he is doing a good job at Rangers, his name will continue to be linked with Premier League jobs but, even if he wasn’t, his profile would probably still get his foot in the door at most clubs, and Newcastle is no different.

It’s an easy story to write, a club with a big fan base but is relatively unfashionable with no real history of winning trophies needs to attract the better players that it can now afford to pay for, the quickest way to do this? Sign a manager who will command the respect of these players, someone for them to look up to.

Footballers are a fickle bunch, despite not winning Champions League trophies as a manager, his exploits as a player mean that he will have been idolised by many youngsters from outwith these shores, however, he has previous for proving that he is loyal.

Which Rangers keeper last made an international appearance for Scotland?

He could have left Liverpool on more than one occasion in his playing days but stayed when others would have left to chase trophies and a bigger pay packet, it would have been the easier option, especially when he was surrounded by inferior players.

At Rangers, 55 was only the start, and you get the feeling that he won’t want to leave until he has put right the wrongs of his first few seasons in charge – no domestic cup wins and qualification for the Champions League – only then can he claim that it has been a job well done and that he has restored us to our rightful place.

Until then, Newcastle will just have to join the queue like the rest of them.
