Steven Gerrard never says anything by mistake, and one of his finest qualities is how well polished he is in front of the cameras.

He spoke last week about the reported interest from Newcastle United in potentially offering him the manager’s job and a crack at the Premier League, however, each time it was batted away with consummate ease, not that he isn’t keeping an eye on the situation.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Ger, Alan Hutton, revealed that the Rangers gaffer will be in demand and knows that a manager with his profile will always be linked with jobs:

“I think Gerrard’s right – everybody is interested.

“He’s batted the question away by opening it up to everybody because we’re all interested. It’s huge news in the world of football.

“He knows there’s interest in him. It just shows what a fantastic job he’s done to be linked alongside the likes of some of these managers.

“He’s got a job to do at Rangers and he’s got great respect for Steve Bruce. He probably doesn’t want to talk too much about it.

“But at the end of the day, everyone is interested in what’s going on at Newcastle.

“But he’ll be fully focused on Rangers and he’s trying to put the speculation to the side.”

At Vital Rangers, we’ve never believed that Gerrard was going to go to Newcastle, Hutton is right though, his reputation as a  player would be enough to see him get interviews for most jobs – if he wanted them.

The work he has done at Ibrox – particularly in Europe – has only added to that, proving that he has what it takes to handle one of the toughest and most pressurised jobs in football, where second place is as good as last.

After winning the league last season, one of the first things Gerrard spoke about was areas in which he has failed – the lack of domestic cup wins a particular sore point, and it is this single mindedness that will keep him in Govan, he still has a job to do.
