Alfredo Morelos is just one European goal away from equalling Ally McCoist’s record of 21 across the continent’s major tournaments following a well taken double against Lincoln Red Imps on Thursday evening, as reported by The Daily Record.

Last season the Colombian international set a new UEFA record by scoring 14 goals before Christmas and in the process, also topped the Europa League goal scoring charts for the group stages.

In his post match interview, Steven Gerrard was full of praise for his striker but was at pains to emphasis the relative status of both players at the club:

“It’s superb for him from a personal point of view. I’m sure he is aware of that and has it in his sights.

“They are two terrific goalscorers but I don’t think we can yet discuss Alfredo Morelos in the same breath as Ally McCoist because one won trophies here, one made this team champions and winners.

“Alfredo has yet to do that. It’s certainly an incentive and a good title to get but for me he’s not ready to be discussed in the same breath as Ally McCoist just yet. But he could be if he is around long enough.”

This could be construed as a dig at the striker and the fact that he has yet to score the goals that has led his team to trophy success, something that McCoist excelled at with a Roy of the Rovers like consistency.

Will Morelos beat McCoist's record?

Yes

Yes

No

Gerrard is a big fan of Morelos but he is also right to make sure that his feet stay on the ground, if he wants to become a Gers legend, then silverware is an absolute priority, in particular winning title number 55.
