There have been murmurings recently that the hierarchy at Aston Villa believe that they need a bigger name manager to take them to the next level with Dean Smith hardly the sort of boss that will persuade potential signing targets to move to the Midlands.

One name believed to be close to the top of their list is Steven Gerrard and the Gers gaffer has already shown how influential he can be when it comes to being the difference in the transfer market.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips believes that the Rangers boss would be tempted by such a move but that any rumours could be a bit premature when asked if it would be an attractive proposition:

“Of course it is, Villa are a massive club.

“I’m very surprised that Gerrard’s been mentioned while Dean Smith is still there, they’re doing very well this season, why would you even look to replace him?

“It’s a big challenge for Stevie to come to Villa and what could he do that Smith can’t do?

“At Rangers, he has a bright future but at the moment, Smith is a safe pair of hands for Villa.

“If that job was made available then Gerrard would definitely consider it I’m sure, because we all know Aston Villa are a big club in world football.”

Gerrard knocked back a few offers before joining Rangers, he could have taken an option with less stress or pressure to win every game but there was a reason he came to us – prestige and because you have to win every game, a standard that he set himself as a player.

Villa are, historically, a big club, but are they in the Champions League? No. Do they have a realistic chance of winning the Premier League? No. They may have a bigger transfer budget or make more money every season, but are they on our scale? No chance.
