Despite adding two new players in the summer, there have been calls for Rangers to add more depth to the centre-half position in recent weeks with James Sands playing alongside Connor Goldson and the American being backed up by Leon King.

In itself, this isn’t an issue, after all, how else is King going to improve unless he gets game time? Sands has also, arguably, been our best and most consistent player this season too other than, somewhat ironically, Borna Barisic.

This week though has seen a name from previous summers emerge and, for all that it might have been a deal that was done in the past, it now looks as if it’s nothing more than an agent trying to get his client’s name out in the open.

Rangers News have reported on a freelance journalist’s claim that 61-cap England international Gary Cahill is being considered as an option, however, at 36-years old and without a pre-season, it is highly unlikely that any move is imminent.

Not only do we have Sands and King available but Ben Davies is also fully fit again and Cahill wouldn’t come cheap, what would be the point in signing someone like him after letting Leon Balogun go?

I could have seen this deal being a possibility last year or the year before, however, we just don’t need him now and that situation isn’t going to change any time soon unless an already lengthy injury list gets even worse, and that’s without considering John Souttar and Filip Helander being out long-term – seven centre-halves on the books really would be money not well spent.
