Rangers attacker Glenn Middleton believes he is a better player after dropping out of Steven Gerrard’s first-team, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

The teenager made 24 appearances for the club in the first half of the season, initially impressing fans and pundits with his exciting and pacy wing play.

Consistency in the quality of his performances dried up though and Gerrard eventually took the decision to have him play predominately with the reserves side, with only three substitute appearances coming since the turn of the year.

He’s been in blistering form for the second string recently and was awarded with an appearance against Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday.

Middleton completely agrees with the decision to drop him from team selections, believing he is now a much better player.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the 19-year-old said:

The break has definitely helped. It’s allowed me to work harder in the gym, get stronger, faster, fitter, and allowed me to work on different things on the training pitch. I definitely feel like a better player now.

I know what I’m good at and what I can improve, and it’s maybe about making what I’m good at as strong as possible and working on the other parts as well.

I was first to admit it, I knew my performances weren’t what they should have been and what they were at the start of the season.

It is always good to maybe take a back seat.

Middleton’s attitude is excellent and he clearly didn’t let the flurry of starts in the early stages of the season go to his head. He hasn’t sulked, far from it, and is now well placed to make an impact in Gerrard’s side next season.

The manager will have a great opportunity in the remaining league games to decide whether he is good enough to be part of the squad or perhaps should head out on loan to further his development.
