This could be a glimpse of what Saturday will look like.

Thanks to scaffolding erected around one of the monuments in George Square, a creative kind on Twitter (@GlasgowIsBlue72) has superimposed a couple of Rangers flags to set the mood.

Jubilant Rangers fans look set to descend on Glasgow’s civic centre on Saturday afternoon, following the trophy presentation at Ibrox.

This comes despite a call from Scotland’s justice minister Humza Yousaf asking for people to stay away.

As reported by the Scottish Sun:

Yousaf wrote on Twitter: “Understand what an important season it has been for @RangersFC but I am urging fans not to gather during the trophy presentation on Saturday.”

“I have had constructive engagement with RFC, Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council. We’re all urging fans not to gather, virus has not gone away.”

“There is, ultimately, only so much all of those involved can do. Fans will have to take personal responsibility and ensure they do not put their own health, or the health of their community at risk.”

Recent Events

There is a perception that Rangers and the fans have been targeted unfairly given other gatherings and protests of a political nature that have taken place, in and around Glasgow over recent weeks.

Even on Thursday afternoon in the southside of the city, there was a considerable gathering in a residential location.

Surely all civic gatherings and public expression should be treated fairly?

Yes, the virus is still prevalent and due care should be taken. Personal responsibility is important too.

That said, with the vaccine rollout continuing with positive results, there should also be an element of freedom and a measured approach taken when commenting on large gatherings.

At the previous Rangers fan party in George Square in March, there was no significant or large-scale transmission identified.

Hopefully a good natured, yet boisterous celebration will take place at the weekend as fans come together to mark the momentous occasion for Rangers.

After all, we are told how much of a welcoming, tolerant city that Glasgow is…
