Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has compared defender Connor Goldson to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, highlighting that there is not a complete lack of leadership in the Ibrox dressing room.

The Gers boss was heavily critical of his side of the wake of Saturday’s dour 0-0 draw at home to St Johnstone, claiming that needs more leaders his first team to really challenge for Scottish Premiership.

However, it seems he is happy with at least one member of his starting eleven.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he was full of praise for Goldson yesterday, saying:

Connor has been huge for us from day one. When I first sat down with Connor I got a feeling that he was a winner and a leader. He wanted to play football.

The club has been great for Connor, the stage, the supporters, the European run, but there’s no doubt we have benefited from having him here because he has been an absolute rock for us.

I can tell by his face, he reminds me in many ways of Jamie Carragher who would get confrontational when you tried to rest him.

That’s the mentality we need at this football club, we need players who are desperate to put their bodies on the line. He certainly ticks that box.

Goldson has been one of the main signing success stories from last summer’s splurge in the transfer market and it’s no surprise to hear that the former Brighton man is setting standards on the training pitch and in the dressing room that other players must aspire to.

It’s clear what Gerrard is looking for when bringing players to the club in terms of personality and attitude and hopefully we can add more of them at the end of the season.

In the short-term though we need more desire shown throughout the squad or seriously risk having another trophy-less season.
