The Rangers faithful have been urged to show patience to the club and current manager Graeme Murty and not expect us to overtake Celtic anytime soon despite how they have ‘suffered’ in recent years.

Murty receives the unlikely support from former manager Mark Warburton who said he understands that fans do ‘crave success’ but he feels the financial gap on our Old Firm rivals is widening despite our return to the top flight.

Speaking to Sky Sports this week with tempers again flared following the defeat to Kilmarnock in the last game, Warburton explained that as long as Celtic had the advantage of Champions League football and the riches available there Rangers would continue to be in a position where investment and patience was required before we could more appropriately compete with them.

‘You have to recognise Celtic have been in the Champions League and with that comes financial rewards. All that does there is increase the gap between Celtic and Rangers. Every year you are fighting now to close that financial gap.’

I doubt his call to ‘dampen some expectation’ will go over well with many, especially given the nature of his departure from the club and stating it was a ‘privilege’ to manage us will change few minds on that front.

But he does have a point in relation to Celtic – but that might get lost with Kilmarnock thoughts still fresh.
