Former Premier League striker, Darren Bent, feels that Rangers should look to cash in on Alfredo Morelos given the £20million transfer fee being rumoured.

Speaking to Football Insider, the retired England international now pundit, thinks the time is right for the Colombian international to move on.

So what has Bent said?

When speaking about the potential windfall that could come Rangers way, Bent said:

“Obviously you’ve got all the on-field antics. For me, I know he’s an absolute fans favourite and they love him but you’ve got to look at the bigger picture.

“He’s playing really well, his price is never going to be as high as it is now and he hasn’t had a great second half of the season.

“I’d try and cash in now and try get some money for him. If you get £20-25m you can replace him. If someone from the Premier League, £25m in today’s market isn’t going to get you a lot but in Scotland that’s an awful lot of money.”

So is Bent correct?

Morelos has improved every season he has been at Rangers and with a few rough edges still to his game, there is plenty for him to work on as he looks to become the finished article, however, the last few months have shown that despite all of his on-field talents, he will never get a fair crack of the whip from the Scottish media.

With 29-goals to his name so far, and more impressively, 14 in the Europa League alone, Morelos has shown that he can be trusted at an elite level which will be attractive to teams operating in the top five leagues.

Bent is correct, if Rangers can secure a transfer of £20m or more, they should accept it knowing that it would contribute hugely to the overall strengthening of the team, for all that his absence after the winter break highlighted the Gers reliance on his goals, it also showed that Steven Gerrard needs to consider tweaking his tactics to make them more flexible.

His Europa League performances have been the highlight of the season but perhaps Gerrard is now thinking that he needs a forward who can be relied upon to produce the goods in domestic football and sign someone who isn’t a marked man in the eyes of officials as soon as he steps onto the pitch.
