Rangers were last week linked with a move for Brentford midfielder Lewis MacLeod, with his contract set to expire at the Bees come the end of this season.

The Scottish Sun reported that the former Ibrox man had rejected a new deal with the Championship outfit, alerting both Rangers and Leeds United ahead of the January transfer window.

It could be a case of picking him up on the cheap if he fails to sign a new contract before then.

Rated at £650,000 by Transfermarkt, MacLeod has overcome injury problems to emerge this season as first-team regular at Brentford, scoring two and assisting two more in 13 Championship appearances.

He of course came through the academy at Rangers, making over 70 appearances for the club when making our way up through the Scottish lower leagues.

He’d certainly be an intriguing option for Steven Gerrard, who knows that his midfield is far from complete if we are to compete for major honours this season and beyond.

Would MacLeod be a smart buy? Have your say in our poll below…
