Rangers will sell one or two first-team squad members, that is a given, the question of who, is  little less certain.

One player who could be heading out the door is George Edmundson, not only after his Covid-19 protocol breach last year, but because we appear to have signed a natural replacement in Jack Simpson.

Steven Gerrard will go into pre-season with six senior centre-halves at his disposal, however, former Ger, Alan Hutton, reckons that the 23-year old might yet get a second chance, as told to Football Insider:

“They’re in a very strong position.

“Ultimately, there are two years left (on his contract) so they don’t have to sell him. He’s gone down to Derby and done really well. He got his name out there and his performances warrant the interest from other clubs.

“If you don’t get the money they’re looking for, whatever that may be, he can stay and try force his way back into Rangers.

“I know it’s not quite worked out to this point but this is the start of a new season. Everybody starts from fresh again so there’s an opportunity there.

“Rangers are very strong at the moment, they’ll be happy to hold on to him. However, if somebody comes in with the right offer, they have got cover at centre-half.”

Hutton is right in that everyone starts pre-season afresh but I just can’t see how Edmundson is going to get another chance, especially when you consider the quality of players that will be ahead of him in the queue.

How many players do Rangers have at the Euros this summer?

We’ve had offers for him already and his loan spell at Derby County will have done his price tag no harm at all, there is every chance we could double the £900,000 or more that we paid Oldham for him if we are patient.

Personally I’d rather sell a few fringe players and one first-team regular if there is a funding hole to be filled and Edmundson is pretty near the top of the list of names I’d expect to be out the door.
