Rangers commercial department has been working flat out one the last 18-months, looking to soften the financial blow caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

They have been rightly praised for several initiatives and the latest – the Edmiston House project – is one that could see the club earn millions each year, as revealed by James Bisgrove in an interview with the Four Lads Had a Dream blog.

Football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, has explained why something so obvious wasn’t done sooner but has backed the initiative to be a huge success as the club enters it’s 150th anniversary celebrations, as told to Football Insider:

“You might ask why they didn’t do it sooner, but Rangers’ priority was to invest on the pitch.

“John Bennett [Rangers vice-chairman] described it as a ‘recovery phase’ whereby they wanted to get things right in terms of being a successful football club then start to develop the other potential income streams.

“I think Edmiston House ties in really well with the 150th anniversary of the football club and the history of the club.

“That was critical. If they had delayed it two more years, it may have been a lost opportunity but they’re now on the right track.

“It’s an asset and a case of utilising the support of the Rangers fanbase for more than just matchdays.“

When Dave King took over, he made it perfectly clear that millions would have to be spent on upgrading Ibrox and the Auchenhowie training centre, and with success on the pitch secured, attentions – and funds – can now be allocated elsewhere, to see that becoming more sustainable in the future.

How many players do Rangers have at the Euros this summer?

The current share issue will also aid this development and it will bring Rangers into line with several of Europe’s top clubs, having a facility alongside the stadium that can be used by fans on matchdays to enhance their experience at the same time as improving the club’s bank balance.
