Rangers strengthened the forward line with the additions of Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten over the summer and both have made telling contributions in their early appearances as Light Blues players.

Jermain Defoe continues to defy the odds and with a remarkable 28 goals and 10 assists in his 29 starts, there is every chance that he could put off retirement for another season, if you are good enough, you are young enough, so to speak.

The biggest question mark remains over the future of Alfredo Morelos though with Ross Wilson revealing that the player knows where the club stands on any potential transfer:

“Alfredo is slightly different. Again, a lot of noise. Not a lot of it right, I have to say.

“We had interest in Alfredo and we had an agreement that if there was a club that met a valuation that we had in mind, then we would look at that.

“That valuation wasn’t met and we rejected some offers for him because they didn’t meet that valuation and he remains with us going forward and we will see what the future holds for him.”

If he does leave, there could be a potential solution not too far away in the Premier League, in the form of a previous “target” – Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle.

He is capable of leading the line on his own or playing with players around him, he also doesn’t need many chances to score and has an impressive record despite never getting a chance with a really dominant team – 102 career goals in 258 senior appearances mainly in the Championship and Premier League point to someone who knows where the goal is.

Who scored Rangers first competitive goal of the season?

More importantly, his contract at St James’ Park expires in the summer and he could see a move to Ibrox as the opportunity to not only win silverware but also to play for a team that will create more than one chance a game for him.

The recruitment team will have one eye on forward planning and Gayle – rated at £7million – could easily step into Morelos’s shoes immediately, but also be the man who replaces Defoe further down the line, if we decide to look at a long term, younger option, when the enigmatic Colombian eventually leaves these shores.
