Rangers used to enjoy the effects of the “Steven Gerrard factor” the pull of a legendary former player who carried an authority into management with him, there’s no doubt we managed to lure players that might have chosen to go elsewhere if we didn’t have the former Liverpool and England skipper at the helm.

Now though, we have another iconic figure of the game in charge in the shape of Giovanni van Bronckhorst with Alan Hutton claiming that he could be the difference in persuading Danilho Doekhi to move to Glasgow rather than moving up the league in his homeland, as told to Football Insider:

“Obviously, with Van Bronckhorst’s time over there in the Netherlands, he will know the player really well. The player will know him. It’s much like the Steven Gerrard situation, he’s got a really good pull.

“The ball is in Rangers’ court now. Do they want to wait and try and get him on a free? I’m pretty sure there’ll be other clubs looking for his signature.

“Or do they just go full steam ahead, get the deal done, pay the £2million and get him in now. They’ve obviously got the [initial £12million] money from Nathan Patterson.

“Do they want to spend a bit and get their targets through the door? That centre-back position in the Rangers team is up in the air at the moment for a lot of people.

“I think it would show good intent from Rangers to just go and get it done.”

The decision of whether or not to go for Doekhi in January will probably depend on what happens with John Souttar and if the Hearts centre-half ends up at Rangers this month, the need to sign the Dutch youth cap dissipates immediately.

From which country does Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist come from?

The other factor will be the fitness of Filip Helander and Leon Balogun and whether or not they can be trusted to get us through to the end of the season without breaking down again, Calvin Bassey and Connor Goldson have formed a solid partnership but we need cover – Covid-19 has not gone away.

Hutton is right though, for all that Gerrard was a pull for some players, in Doekhi’s case, the opportunity to work for a coaching team that is from the same country as him will be an attractive proposition.
