Dave King will always be welcome back at Ibrox after not only restoring Rangers back to the top of Scottish football but because of the way that he built the club when it was on it’s knees.

The journey to self sufficiency has been temporarily delayed due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic but the foundations had been laid prior to the ex-chairman stepping down to look after his own affairs in South Africa.

Last week a surprise announcement from King was made in which he revealed his ambition to return to the board, a decision that football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, feels may be down to failings of the current board, as told to Football Insider:

“There are legacy issues in terms of King’s relationship with some people on the board.

“It has been mooted that he is hugely disappointed with the lack of fan engagement. That might go some way to explaining this news.

“Also, it could be that he was disappointed that Rangers went through an alternative route in their own share offering.

“It might be that he feels that has made it more difficult to transfer his shares to Club 1872.

“Under those circumstances, he may feel the best way to represent his views and the fans’ is to return to the board.”

King always wanted the club to have a representation from the fans so that a repeat of 2012 was impossible, through Club 1872 he looked to make this happen but the in-fighting and lack of cohesion within the organisation makes it a hard sell for fans that don’t currently invest – he is unlikely to get his shares sold by this method.

There a rumours about King not seeing eye to eye with every member on the board, however, this doesn’t mean that he is looking to cause trouble, he could quite easily do that from afar as the major shareholder.

His statement was met with a few raised eyebrows but it seemed to genuine in it’s nature, that he wants to play his part in keeping the club at the top can only be a good thing, after all, he’s not done a bad job over the last five years.
