Former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs believes Rangers should show ‘a little bit of class’ this Sunday by giving the Hoops a guard of honour at Ibrox, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

The paper claimed this week that the decision has been taken by the Gers that we won’t be partaking in the pre-match ritual and honouring Celtic for their Scottish Premiership title win.

In the past teams have traditionally applauded crowned champions onto the pitch.

Stubbs reckons Steven Gerrard’s side should be making it happen though, telling The Scottish Sun:

If it was on the other foot Rangers would want Celtic to do it. I think you have to rise above it and show a little bit of class.

There’s a lot of talk it the minute in the game about sectarianism, all this from the crowds.

We have to bypass all that, rise above it and show a bit of class.

Unfortunately I don’t think it’s going to happen.

The rivalry between Rangers and Celtic is simply too strong and passionate for this to take place, so I have no idea why it’s a controversial notion not to clap the Parkhead side onto the pitch this Sunday.

Stubbs is right in one respect, if Rangers had won the league and we were heading to Celtic Park, there’s absolutely no chance we would be given a guard of honour either.

It might work when there is no ill feeling between two clubs, but the Old Firm rivalry has deep roots and two sets of die hard supporters who take meaning out of such gestures.

Celtic have done well to win the league, but it’s hardly deserving of enormous Rangers respect is it?
