Rangers consider budget summer move for experienced Championship regular

|

Rangers are interested in signing Middlesbrough attacking midfielder Stewart Downing, according to The Teesside Gazette.

Downing is of course a former teammate of manager Steven Gerrard at both club and international level and the paper report they could be reunited this summer with the 34-year-old’s contract set to expire at the English Championship outfit.

He’s free to leave and is now considering his options, with Gerrard identifying him as a potential wide option for next season’s trophy charge, according to the report.

Despite his advancing years, Downing is still playing regularly at a decent level having made 32 appearances for Boro this season as they push for a promotion play-off place.

With over 400 Premier League appearances to his name, he certainly has appealing experience, but are we becoming too much of a ‘retirement home’ for past-it stars under Gerrard?

Jermain Defoe, Steven Davis and Gareth McAuley are all currently at the club and not offering much, with Allan McGregor the only veteran offering real value to the first-team.

The obsession with older players is slightly concerning and most fans would likely want to see a fresh approach taken to our transfer dealings this summer.
