Rangers have conceded just three goals in domestic football this season and an ever present has been Connor Goldson, with the 27-year old being near faultless for Steven Gerrard.

With his current deal set to end in 2022, a new contract should be a priority to ensure that he is rewarded for the consistency that he has shown since signing from Brighton, and speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan believes that one should be just around the corner.

So what has Whelan said?

When asked if he believed that the vice-captain was worthy of improved terms, he said:

“Goldson is fully deserving of a new contract. Absolutely.

“He has been one of their standout performers this season, getting the goals in the Old Firm, it has shown Steven Gerrard that he is worthy of a bumper contract.

“I think right now every player at that club is doing their job. Gerrard will not want to let any of his players go right now, especially not Goldson.

“Any players coming towards the end of their contract, it will be sorted out soon. The club will extend them because they are a great group of players and Goldson is a key player in that group.”

So is Whelan correct?

There are few players more deserving than a new contract, if anything, he is only surpassed by the skipper, James Tavernier, in terms of someone that should be rewarded for their performances over the last couple of seasons and in particular this term.

How many goals has Morelos scored in Europe for Rangers?

Goldson is coming up to the last 18-months of his original Rangers deal and is approaching the peak years for a centre-half, there has already been interest reported from the Premier League and the last thing Gerrard would want is to lose such an important player for a pittance.

Alongside Tavernier, Goldson – linked with a £6million move away from Ibrox in the summer – is one of the first names on the team sheet and as a result, he should be rewarded accordingly.
