As far as post match interviews go, Connor Goldson’s after the shambolic defeat to Hibs on Sunday was as big a car crash as you are likely to see.

Zero responsibility taken, blame apportioned elsewhere and all but admitting that he had given up at half-time, not a great look for the club’s vice-captain.

Fans were – rightly – furious with the centre-half whose contract situation only intensifies the spotlight on his performances, it’s safe to say that anything less than perfect against Sparta Prague could see him chased out of Ibrox.

Speaking to Premier TV and reported by the BBC, Goldson’s incredible interview left many watching with their mouths wide open in astonishment:

“Not one individual can hold their head high.

“The first two goals are from a corner. People are in the wrong position, which we have worked on yesterday. The second is from a throw-in and people are in the wrong position.

“If players don’t want to follow instructions, then we can’t blame coaches because they give us the information to do our job and players don’t want to take that on board.

“We can be in there at half-time and say believe in ourselves blah, blah, blah but the game is over at 3-1 down at half-time.

“We know that the new manager was there today and you’d hope they [the players] would want to impress but after that performance, we need a change.

“We need a spark. I feel like – and I don’t want to say this – we have lost a bit of hunger.

“All of a sudden we are champions and we don’t need to work as hard, which is wrong and I feel like that has crept in this season. Hopefully, the new manager can come in and give us a spark.”

He basically says what we’ve all been thinking, we just aren’t doing the basics right at all and too many are switching off, too often and it is costing us goals – answers on a postcard when we last scored first in a domestic game.

Last season, without fans, we could hear Goldson organising other players around him, has he stopped doing this or are they simply not listening – why would they abandon practises that had been so successful last season?

What it does show is that we need change, we have a big squad and there are players that can come in – Fashion Sakala, Ianis Hagi, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, Juninho Bacuna, Nathan Patterson and Jon McLaughlin were all on the bench and I’d be hugely surprised if Giovanni van Bronckhorst doesn’t bring most of them in to face Sparta, if the others won’t listen to instructions, maybe these ones will.
