Football fans aren’t stupid.

Why would Rangers sign a right-footed, physical centre-half who is comfortable on the ball and good at building possession if Connor Goldson was going to extend his contract?

We’ve known for a while now that the vice-captain is probably heading for pastures new and, at 29-years old, you would think his decision will rest on one thing, and one thing only – winning the Scottish Premiership and qualifying for the Champions League.

The pre-contract signing of John Souttar is a good indication that we are already pre-planning, as is James Sands arrival with BBC 5 Live pundit, Danny Mills, reckoning that this spells the end of Goldson’s time in Glasgow, as told to Football Insider:

“You’ve always got to look ahead and plan for the worst. We’re not party to what’s going on behind the scenes and what’s involved.

“You have to assume that talks have been had but they haven’t been particularly great. There would have been murmurings that it was going to get done.”

Goldson has talked in the past about any decision being best for his family and that he isn’t content with just winning “55”, suggesting that he wants the club to show the same ambition and build a squad that can go on to dominate, however, in this transfer window, we haven’t seen the arrival of any players that are significantly better than what we already have.

There must still be an element of doubt because Ross Wilson himself has said he is relaxed about the contract situation at the club and that’s with several key players having deals that expire in the next 18-months, Goldson being the most imminent departure if it isn’t sorted out.

Sometimes we forget that footballers are only human and Goldson has every right to wait and see what offers he has before making a decision on what could be his last big contract, it’s a pivotal moment in his career and one that he won’t want to rush in to – at least, if he does decide his future lies elsewhere, we have taken the necessary steps to protect ourselves, no one player is ever bigger than the club after all.
