Goldson going nowhere, what we have is what we go with

There has been one recurring theme from the fallout of our defeat to Hibs – Connor Goldson needs to be dropped and sold as soon as possible.

There is just one problem with this though, are we really suggesting that Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun are the answer at centre-half or that Jack Simpson should come in?

This is the cause and effect in multicolour 3-D, HD, picture perfect, whatever you want to call it, of his current status at the club.

Because he hasn’t signed an extension to his contract, he isn’t interested, he isn’t committed, he doesn’t want to be here – this is the perception.

Individually, his performance levels haven’t actually dropped that much but when – as vice-captain – you come out after a game and say that the “hunger has gone“, you leave yourself wide open for every inch of criticism that is coming your way.

It is an understandable emotional response to want him punted but we simply can’t afford do do that until either Filip Helander returns from injury, Niko Katic is recalled from his loan or we have signed replacements, and none of these factors are options until January. What we have, is what we go with until then.

What he needs to do is his job.

He needs to be a leader again and prove that he can be trusted to get the defence back on top, there was a reason we set a clean sheet record last year and Goldson was an integral part of that – nobody wants players that have questionable commitment pulling on the jersey but cutting our nose off to spite our face is a far from desirable alternative.
