Rangers coach comments on big Old Firm derby problem this weekend

|

Rangers should be in confident mood heading into this weekend’s derby against Celtic at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard’s side have won five matches in a row in the Scottish Premiership, scoring twelve goals and conceding just one in that time.

That’s all been mostly without key stars like Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent too, both of whom have spent much of that time on the sidelines due to suspension from the last time we faced the Hoops.

In their place Jermain Defoe and Scott Arfield have emerged as two of the team’s top performers in their positions, exciting supporters and pundits with their burgeoning attacking partnership.

Rangers assistant Gary McAllister admits that as a result of this impact Gerrard has a selection dilemma on his hands ahead of this weekend, but insists it’s a good problem to have.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “We have two proven strikers who are at different times of their career. One can learn from the other, definitely. We need competition for places and we have two top No9s. It’s a nice dilemma. It’s a nice problem.”

So who should the manager go with?

Morelos does have 29 goals to his name for the season but none of them have come against Celtic.

In fact in his two seasons at the club he’s failed to score a single goal in the Old Firm derby, leading some to question whether he can produce in the biggest matches.

His discipline problems also make him something of a liability, as we seen last time out when he needlessly elbowed Celtic captain Scott Brown in the face and got himself sent off for the fifth time this season.

Defoe is an experienced player and has played in massive matches throughout his long career. He can be trusted to not only keep his cool but also produce the goods when needed.

With three goals and three assists in his last five games he will also be in confident mood and in my opinion is the man to go with this Sunday.

Is this decision perhaps simpler than you’d think at first glance?
