Rangers success on the pitch wouldn’t have been possible without stability and security off it, wealthy directors putting their hands in their pockets to match the dedication shown by fans in buying season tickets, merchandise and investing in Club 1872.

The supporters group’s latest initiative could see an investment of £2.5million made in the club, further increasing the percentage that fans own with the ultimate goal, one day, of having 25% of Rangers in fan ownership, something football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes would be a big “statement of intent”, as reported by Football Insider:

“The aim of Club 1872 is to achieve 25 per cent ownership because that will allow the fanbase to have the power of veto over some decisions.

“It will be a statement of intent if they can achieve this target because it is going to be challenging for them.

“If they are going to achieve it then they can turn around to the sceptics and say, ‘well, we’ve done this, why can’t we go on to do more?’

“I think that will be their strategy.”

Former chairman Dave King always hoped for fans to have a bigger say and a move away from the “sugar daddy” model of ownership, without realising it, by persuading other like minded fans to invest, the club is now backed by directors with the club’s best interests at heart.

This puts less pressure on Club 1872 but, if anything, it could work against them as fans know that the club is in good hands, making their £2.5m target by the end of June really would be impressive, at a time when Celtic fans are looking for their money back, Rangers fans are going that little bit further once again.
